Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. My favorite project was the landscape project. I think I followed my reference accurately and made it look similar. I did a good job using different colors and water to blend the sky and water. The colors went well together and I made it darker as it got farther away. I decided to not put the tree in because it would cramp the picture and take away from the ocean's colors. I instead made the umbrella a bit bigger and put alot of detail into it. For the sand I started a base layer of tan and then added different shades of brown and blended them. I also added holes from the people walking in the sand for extra detail. This was my favorite piece because I worked hard on adding lots of different colors and shades, and it came out well.

2. I did not like the stencil project because I wasn't very impressed with how it came out, but I learnt alot from it. I learned how to take a reference and make it come to life. I  learned how to make a base for a piece involving newspapers and making patterns with them. After this, I learned how to trace off of a projection and onto the paper. I had to learn how to use the x-acto knife and make precise cuts to create the image. I struggled with this because I ended up cutting off important pieces, but I learned from these mistakes. I am confident now that I could cut much better. I also learned how to spray paint, which was a fun experience.  Overall, I did not like how my stencil turned out, but I certainly learned alot from it.

3.I used techniques from previous projects and activities when I did the game drawing. It incorporated perspective which we did in the town activities. The town drawings prepared me to use the vanishing point to my advantage. It also taught me how important it is to use perspective when going for a more realistic piece. It used shading which was shown in the value portraits. I was good at shading because of this and I think it really improved my final product. However, new in this project was painting. We had not painted before this but we practiced a bit and it think it added good effects and definitely helped me in future pieces.

4. I think the animal print project was the least important to our art career. It used ink which we did not use after that at all and did not seem that important to the rest of the projects. Most of our projects focused on value and shading which this one did not include. It seemed that this project was a time-waster and did not help us on future projects. This project was cut out from clay and that was difficult and was not used later. It did help me use space better and contrast which was useful in other projects. For example, in the landscape I used these tips to create space and contrast between the ocean and the sky. This was the only useful part of this piece in my opinion, and I think we could've done a better project to prepare us for future ones.

5. I think I connected to the clay tile project the most. On my trip to an island we went snorkeling and saw lots of creatures. When the oppurtunity presented itself, I knew I had to make something similar to a coral reef. I chose it because it was so colorful and the colors contrasted and it was fascinating. It reflects me as an artist because I connected my pieces to my personal experiences. Also, in my pieces I tended to try and create contrast with space and different colors. I like the ocean because the water looks nice and it gives a nice feel so I feel that it reflects my art style. Also, I feel that this piece used different characteristics from previous projects and showed my personal style off all in one piece.
